Varney Surfaces started life in 1998 under the name Varney Landscapes, founded by Justin Varney at the age of 23. Back then it was simple. Hard work, long days and a real passion for transforming outdoor spaces.
Justin began carrying out general landscaping works. Patios, turfing, fencing, groundwork and small construction projects. The focus was always the same. Do it properly. Build it to last. Leave every job clean and tidy. Most of the early work came from word of mouth, and that reputation for quality quickly grew across Kent.
As the years went on, more customers began asking for driveways rather than just gardens. Naturally, the business moved further into groundwork and surfacing. Excavation, drainage, sub base preparation, block paving and asphalt became a core part of the work.
It was during this period that the real strength of the company developed. Not just laying a surface, but understanding what goes underneath. Solid foundations. Correct falls. Proper compaction. Drainage that works.
That groundwork knowledge is still one of the key reasons Varney Surfaces projects stand the test of time today.
Around twenty years ago, resin bound surfacing was just starting to gain traction in the UK. It was new, modern and not widely understood.
Justin saw the potential immediately.
A surface that was permeable, strong, decorative and clean looking. A system that, when installed correctly, could completely transform a property. But resin is unforgiving if corners are cut.
Instead of rushing into it, Justin invested time learning the correct installation methods. Understanding UV stable resins, aggregate blends, mixing ratios, temperature control, base preparation and crack prevention. The early years involved hands on learning and refining techniques to ensure consistency and durability.
What began as a small part of the business quickly became the main focus.
As resin bound installations increased, it became clear the business had evolved. The name Varney Landscapes no longer reflected what the company specialised in.
The business became Varney Surfaces Ltd, focusing on high quality resin bound and specialist surfacing installations across Kent and the South East.
